About Mara Canyon, Kamloops, British Columbia

The Mara Canyon Trail is a fine example of British Columbia’s boundless beauty and offers hikers a glimpse into the region’s desert ecosystems and its fascinating geologic history. Located on the outskirts of the city of Kamloops, Mara Canyon is a must-do hike for anybody visiting the incredibly diverse Columbia/Shuswap region.

The hike is not the easiest and requires climbing up boulders and nearly crawling at some points of the trail. The path leads directly up the mountain through a canyon which was created by a seasonal creek bed or a wash as they call them in the desert. Your “Wow Factor” will be at an all-time high on this trail as epic hoodoo spires and unique rock formations are abundant within the canyon. There are trails everywhere you look and if you’re like us, you will be plagued with the urge to explore them all, but keep on the path because the best is yet to come. Soon enough you will reach an incredible slot canyon that is reminiscent of places like Utah or Arizona. As with many slot canyons, the utmost caution should be exercised, and paying attention to the weather forecast could save your life. During rainstorms, you will want to avoid these areas as they can quickly fill up with raging water and have hikers in all kinds of trouble.

Spotting wildlife in Mara Canyon is always a possibility and some of the animals you may encounter include rattlesnakes, cougars (mountain lions), deer, bears, and bighorn sheep. Cactus are also numerous, so it is not recommended to stray from the trail unless you want to get covered in them.
