Step Into Middle-earth: The Ultimate Guide to the Shuswap Shire
Calling all Lord of the Rings fans! Welcome to the Shuswap Shire and its lovely Hobbit house, the Honey Hollow. Hidden deep in the lush Shuswap forest of British Columbia lies a storybook haven that perfectly embodies J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous tales.
Where is the Shuswap Shire?
This real-life fairytale home is situated in the village of Magna Bay in the North Shuswap region of BC and offers guests an unrivalled stay in the peaceful woods on its own 9 acres.
The Magic of Honey Hollow
Though the property itself is quite serene, the star of the show is the human-sized hobbit house called the Honey Hollow. It offers guests a cozy experience in a meticulously crafted earth home that is built right into the side of a hill.
The theme is, of course, meant to evoke a rugged Middle-earth vibe, and it certainly does so well, but guests will still be able to enjoy most of the modern comforts of today. That being said, the Shire is about unplugging, enjoying nature, and having a truly authentic experience, so, as of yet, there is no WIFI on the property. If you’re a nomad or you work online, I suggest heading over to the Raven Coffee Spot.
When searching for a Lord of the Rings themed cabin in BC, you will find several in the region, but be sure to look specifically for the Honey Hollow on Airbnb.
For us, a stay at a real-life hobbit house had been at the top of our bucket list for quite some time, and it was more than we had expected. The attention to detail is what first blew us away. From the large round wooden front door to the small details like the hidden ring mystery, or the magical Fire Starter, and many more little “easter eggs”.

Exploring the Secret Paradise of Magna Bay
When you stay at the Shuswap Shire, you will be located just minutes from gorgeous Shuswap Lake and several public beach access spots. This means you will be able to enjoy the peace and tranquility of both the woods and the lake.
On-Property Adventure: The Shuswap Shire actually has its own private hiking trail that leads down to McKlellean Creek, where you will find a lush microclimate with vibrant green moss everywhere and a small wooden bridge that crosses the water.
Lake Access: The accommodation is close to parks and beaches like Ross Creek Community Park or Magna Bay Community Park. From these spots, one can easily launch a paddleboard or kayak and even rent a boat in nearby Anglemont.
Local Sightseeing: There are plenty of things to do near Magna Bay, like hiking to nearby Onyx Falls or Evelyn Falls, and if you’re extra adventurous, heading all the way up to Crowfoot Mountain.

Our Experience at the Shuswap Shire
First of all, we were utterly blown away by the work that went into this property. Starting from the Hobbiton-style signs when you drive in, to all the little details that went into the Honey Hollow.
The self-check-in process was straightforward and was even a bit fun, requiring us to enter the round door using a giant metal lock and key. Upon entering the hobbit house, there was an envelope with a kind message from the hosts, which had an authentic wax seal stamp.
Moving into the kitchen, we were thrilled to find a bottle of white wine with a Lord of the Rings themed label, which we delightfully drank in the garden at the little bistro set. The kitchen was not only adorable but had everything we needed for cooking, and came stocked with organic teas and coffee.
We found the living room very cozy, and in the evenings, we really enjoyed hunkering down in front of the fireplace and watching the Lord of the Rings movies that are tucked away in the cabinet.
The bedroom, which doubled as a library or study, was also very inviting, and the bed was quite comfortable, leading to some great nights of sleep. Guests are free to help themselves to any of the books on the shelves as they have a take-a-book, leave-a-book honour system.
Moving to the outside, there were several spots around the property where we could hang out and relax, including the nook in the garden, where there was a BBQ and a bistro set for romantic dinners, which we ended up using several times. There was also a fire pit, and you can purchase bundles of wood if you like or forage for some wood in the surrounding forest. It was very peaceful, with only the sweet sounds of birds filling our ears, which ended up being a very rejuvenating experience.
