About Playa Colomitos, Jalisco, Mexico

Playa Colomitos is one of the most secluded and beautiful beaches in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, and is a must-visit for anybody visiting the village of Boca de Tomatlan or the Puerto Vallarta area. This incredible beach is perfectly tucked into the Sierra Madre Mountains and lies on the gorgeous shores of the Bay of Banderas. Playa Colomitos could be described as a short stretch of pristine sand that lies in a picturesque rocky cove backed by a jungle ravine with a small creek that empties out into the ocean. There is even a beautiful little waterfall if you choose to hike a few minutes up the creek and find it.

There are only two ways to reach this hidden paradise and that is either an adventurous hike through the jungle from Boca de Tomatlan or a boat tour that runs along the coast and stops at several different remote beaches. This little golden sand beach is becoming quite popular nowadays and what was once somewhat of a local secret is no more. That being said you may still have the beach all to yourself if you get to the beach early enough.

Playa Colomitos doesn’t have much in terms of amenities, but there is a vendor who comes later in the day to sell drinks and snacks. There is also a beautiful waterfront restaurant called Ocean Grill Vallarta that will open for reservations only. There are no chairs or umbrellas for rent as there is not much room and the jungle-covered hillside offers an abundance of natural shade cover. The color of the water at Colomitos varies depending on temperature and wind which can cause waves to stir up the water. On a calm day, the water will be perfectly placid and shine a brilliant blue.

How to Get to Playa Colomitos

Getting to Playa Colomitos is an adventure and the beach can only be reached by hiking or boating as there are no roads in this remote part of Jalisco. If you choose to hike to the beach then your journey will begin in Boca de Tomatlan. You will first need to find the footbridge that crosses the river. From there, you will take the coastal trail and follow the numerous signs that say “Playa Colomitos”. The trail leads you on a fairly difficult 30-minute trek featuring plenty of ups and downs as you hike through the humid jungle, so make sure to pack adequate amounts of water. With that, the hike is certainly well worth it and is a great way to experience the nature of Mexico. Once you take in the beauty of Playa Colomitos, you may choose to stay and relax for the day or continue hiking even further for another two miles to Playa Caballo and Playa Las Animas. It is at Las Animas where you will find many restaurants, resorts, vendors, and places to rent loungers and umbrellas. From here you can also hop on a water taxi to get back to Boca de Tomatlan.

If you’re not into hiking or not able to, but still want to see Playa Colomitos then you can easily hop on a water taxi and have them drop you off at the beach for the day. When you want to be picked up you will be able to flag down one of the many passing water taxis and get a ride back to Boca de Tomatlan or Puerto Vallarta.
