Located in San Vicente, the quieter, but equally beautiful sibling of the El Nido, Sunset Beach Resort is a nice break from the usual busy tourist areas of Palawan, Philippines. With breathtaking views looking out over Macatumbalen Beach and the South China Sea, Sunset Beach Resort lives up to its name on a daily basis by providing jaw-dropping sunsets overlooking the bay and its many islands. The property itself features an outdoor pool with views of the sea, along with a beautiful garden showcasing all kinds of tropical plants. The bungalow cabins are all air-conditioned and equipped with a flat-screen TV, safe, mini-bar, and a private bathroom with warm showers. There are an on-site restaurant and bar that serves fresh dishes and cocktails or beers. Guests can also rent a bicycle and explore the surrounding local area.

San Vicente is a great place to start your island-hopping journey and you will be able to barter with local boat owners for a good price. I believe we paid around $20 each for the entire day including lunch, cooked with all locally sourced ingredients. We were able to hit several islands and go snorkeling in some of the clearest and most blue water we had ever seen in our lives. It was well worth it and I highly recommend it.

The bay has very shallow water and allows you to wade far out into the ocean, providing great opportunities for snorkeling and spotting sea creatures just by walking around.
When we first arrived in San Vicente I remember being so exhausted after the long flight from Canada and then spending a couple of days in the high-stress city of Manila, that checking into the Sunset Beach Resort and seeing that water was one of the biggest stress relievers I had ever felt.

The resort is a small establishment and is becoming more and more popular, though they only offer 5 rooms for rent at any given time. We had a conversation with the owner and he seems to like things just the way they are and is content with keeping things simple. This is great for guests who enjoy a quieter more relaxed atmosphere.

You can also hop on a motorized tricycle for really cheap and take a ride uptown to the local market for some bartering. We also rented an electric cart with a driver for the entire day, which included a ride through the jungle to visit a man-made river swimming pool and then a stop at the 14km Long Beach. One great thing about the Philippines is you can have open alcohol in vehicles as long as the driver is sober, which will definitely add some fun and excitement to your tour.
