Playa Malpaso, Nayarit

Playa Malpaso, Nayarit

Playa Malpaso is a gorgeous beach in Mexico that lies on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It sits between the seaside villages of Sayulita and San Francisco (San Pancho). The beach can only be accessed by either boat or hiking in from one of the two towns, and most beachgoers choose to do the hike. The beach is still untouched by commercialization and as such there are no resorts, bars, or even houses, which makes visiting Playa Malpaso a pleasant and relaxing experience. Those visiting the beach will have to hike over a small mountain through sections of hot and humid tropical jungle. That being said, getting to the beach is only a short 1.3 km (0.8 miles) hike that opens up to truly stunning views looking north over Playa Malpaso as well as south over Playa Sayulita.

Playa Malpaso is a must-visit beach and one of the most beautiful in all of Nayarit as it boasts incredible white sand and lovely blue water. The beach has endless amounts of beauty but is not the greatest place for swimming as there is a strong undertow and no lifeguard.

How to Get to Playa Malpaso

In order to reach the trail that takes you to Playa Malpaso, your journey will commence by walking all the way to the termination point of Playa Sayulita. Once there, you will come across a petite stream alongside a precipitous cliff adorned with rocks. Ascend these rocks until you converge upon steps made of cobblestone, which you must then proceed to traverse. These steps will guide intrepid hikers along the coastline until the path veers into the verdant expanse of the jungle for a brief stretch. As you continue on, be on the lookout for a wall of rocks and a dilapidated structure covered in lively graffiti, followed by a diminutive bridge. These serve as unmistakable signs that the desired beach lies close at hand.
