About Sitges, Catalonia, Spain

Located a mere 35km south of Barcelona is the picture-perfect town of Sitges, Spain. It has a very classy feel to it and has been a popular playground for the wealthy since the early 1900s and it’s because of this popularity that it also has some of the most expensive real estate in Europe. Sitges successfully mixes the old in with the new in a seamless fashion, by offering visitors modern hotel accommodations within walking distance of the historical old town. It is a place that world-renowned painter Picasso once fell in love with, he also fell in love with a pigeon, but try not to let that not skew your opinion. With its miles of gorgeous beaches, perfect weather, resorts, and beautiful architecture it's easy to see why so many flock to this quaint little Mediterranean city.

Sitges, Spain

We visited Sitges at the beginning of October, which is apparently the same month as their famous film festival, but we just missed it by a few days. The attraction draws in creative people from the surrounding areas, who love to take part in the fun and festivities. In July and August Sitges into a bit of a wild party town and is popular among the LGBT community.

Where to Eat in Sitges

There are many beachfront restaurants to choose from in Sitges, but like much of Spain people don’t tend to eat till the later hours, far later than we do in North America. My point is if you’re an early bird like me and my family you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything open for an early breakfast in the morning, and finding dinner before 7 pm is also a challenge. For breakfast, we found a spot with a nice view and watched the colorful parrots squawk and fly back and forth in the trees. Apparently, these birds are non-native monk parrots from South America that were brought over as pets and of course, we know how the rest of that story goes.

The beaches in Sitges are numerous and stretch for miles along the gorgeous sea, while off in the distance you will see the Parròquia de Sant Bartomeu I Santa Tecla (Church of Sant Bartomeu). The church is essentially your gateway to the gorgeous old town and its narrow cobblestone streets and arch doorways that seem to belong in a fairy tale. The old town truly is an amazing little peek into Sitges’ medieval past.

We managed to get a clean and cheap room that was directly across from the beach, it was called Hotel Subur Maritim and I highly recommend it. Our room cost us around $60, but breakfast was not included and was fairly expensive. A trolley called the Ting Ting conveniently runs along the waterfront and will pick you up at certain stops around every half hour.

African men line the boardwalk in Sitges selling imported goods at bargain prices and bartering is encouraged here, but in Spain, vendors don’t seem to get as pushy as they do in some other tourist destinations around the world.

The city along with its people gives off a wonderful healthy vibe and in the morning people enjoy walking the boardwalk along the water.

Conclusion

Sitges was a great place to stop for a night and I truly wish we had more time in this delightful little city. The vibes were right and with so many restaurants to choose I feel as though we could have had an eatcation and gained several pounds before leaving. The only thing is Sitges is fairly expensive, at least where we were. Of course, there are probably some well-respected food joints where the locals eat you will find better prices.
