Coral Island or Racha? Planning a private boat day south of Phuket
South of Phuket, two names appear on almost every boat trip menu: Coral Island and the Racha islands. They are often sold in the same breath, but they are different days out. One is a short hop you can finish by lunchtime; the other is a real sea crossing. The choice comes down to distance, season and budget.
Distance first. From Chalong Pier, the usual departure point, Coral Island is about 8 km away, Racha Yai about 24 km and Racha Noi about 35 km. A speedboat reaches Coral Island in around ten minutes and Racha Yai in about half an hour; a motor yacht needs over an hour for Racha Yai. That is why Coral Island works as a half day and Racha mostly does not. In Phuket Rating's comparison of prices for 57 boats on this route, 16 boats sell Coral Island as a four- or five-hour trip, while only three sell Racha Yai as a half day.
Budget. Every price here is for the whole boat with its crew, not per seat. A Coral Island half day starts at ฿18,900 on a long-tail boat. A day at Racha Yai starts at ฿33,900 on a long-tail or a 37 ft speedboat, and a day that adds Racha Noi from ฿51,900. The middle of the range sits much higher: the median Racha Yai day across the 57 boats is ฿108,000, and 31 of them cost more than ฿100,000. At the top, a 102 ft motor yacht asks ฿390,000.
Check where the boat is based. Boats leaving from Chalong are already close to these islands. Boats based at the east-coast marinas have a longer run, and 11 of them add a fuel surcharge for Racha. A lower base price from a distant marina can end up as the higher total, so ask for the figure with fuel included.
Racha Noi costs a little more, or nothing. On the 12 boats that price both days, adding Racha Noi costs between nothing and ฿15,000. On the boats with a fuel surcharge the difference is ฿3,000 to ฿20,000.
No park fee to add. Phi Phi and the Similan Islands charge a national park fee per person in cash. Coral Island and the Racha islands do not.
The season decides the crossing. Both Racha islands are open to the south-west swell, and November to April is the reliable window. From May to October, Coral Island usually goes ahead because the mainland shelters it, while a Racha day is decided against the weather forecast close to the date. If your holiday falls in the wet season and Racha is the point of the trip, keep a second date free.
Which day suits whom. Families with small children, and anyone short of time, usually do better with Coral Island: a short crossing and an easy return. Groups who want a full day at sea and a farther island pick Racha Yai, and those who want the longest run add Racha Noi.
