About Dubrovnik, Dalmatia

Dubrovnik is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a famous walled city with a population of just 43,000 people.

In 1979, it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, which recognized the charming medieval architecture and fortified old town. It survived an earthquake in 1667 which almost destroyed the entire city, and in 1991 survived the civil war. It was besieged for seven months during the Croatian War of Independence, but significant restoration work has seen it become a primary destination for tourists in Croatia.

It is also a popular filming location, and its significance as a tourist destination has doubtless been boosted by its use as King's Landing in the HBO series Game of Thrones. The series became one of the most popular fantasy series worldwide, drawing in huge viewing numbers and inspiring other forms of digital media. Pop Culture explains there’s a spin-off in the pipeline, named House of Dragon, whilst many games have also carried the brand forward. Gala Spins have a slot themed around the series, titled Game of Thrones Power Stacks, and there's a Game of Thrones Conquest game on iOS and Android as well. It's a series recognized the world over, with Dubrovnik featuring as the home of the Iron Throne mentioned in the titles. That has helped drive more visitors than ever before to the city – so many that a People Magazine report discusses how they had to limit tourists as too many were attempting to get into the city.

City Walls

As a walled city, the obvious attraction has to be the walls. They offer ever-changing views out to sea in one direction and give a beautiful view of the old town on the other side. Once upon a time, it might have been the sea views that drew people onto the 13th-century walls, but now views across King's Landing are just as popular. You are best to attempt the full circuit, which is around a mile long. Be sure to check for cruise ships' arrival on the day you intend to visit because if a ship is in town, the walls can be a nightmare to enjoy.

Rector’s Place

The Rector's Palace is another popular location in the city and another Game of Thrones filming location. In Westeros, it was used as the atrium to the Spice King's palace in Qarth, but in Dubrovnik, it is situated right in the heart of the old town. Between the 14th and 19th centuries, the chief citizen, known as the rector, would reside on the first floor of this wonderful building. It now holds exhibits as the Cultural History Museum and, of course, delivers additional charm for Game of Thrones fans.

Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac is another treat for Game of Thrones fans, it was used as the location for the Red Keep, but it is worth a visit for far more than the simple place it holds in pop culture. Fort Lovrijenac is a 10-minute walk to the west of Pile Gate and towers over the sea, 37m high on a rocky outcrop. It is a 13th-century fortress guarding Pile Cover (Blackwater Bay in GoT) entrance, but it is quite a climb. There are 175 stone

steps to ascend before one reaches the building. In the summer, it plays host to a drama of a very different kind, hosting after-dark performances of Hamlet.
