About Sugar Lake, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

Sugar Lake, British Columbia is surrounded by thousands of hectares of dense Okanagan wilderness, as well as lakes, rivers, and streams. The lake is situated 14 km from the quaint countryside community of Cherryville, and around 50 minutes from the city of Vernon. It features two fair-sized islands that can be accessed by boat or kayak and the smaller of the two has the remnants of some old pioneer cabins that burnt to the ground at some point in history. The lake itself is a product of the Sugar Lake Dam, which was built in 1929 and turned part of the Shuswap River into what we now call Sugar Lake.

Like much of the Okanagan Valley, sunny days are abundant in the summer months, but at Sugar Lake, one can enjoy fun in the crystal clear water without all the hustle and bustle of the valley’s busier lakes. Sugar Lake has plenty of gorgeous white sand beaches, many of them only accessible by boat or kayak, but that’s really what makes this lake so special. You can pull your boat right up to your own private beach and have a family picnic or BBQ. The lake is great for swimming, paddleboarding, boating, or just for pure relaxation. It is the perfect place to sit and read a book as you listen to the sounds of nature and the gentle crash of waves on the shore.
